Abstract

The Ambient Compatibility Charter defines the minimal physical and semantic conditions under which a technological system remains compatible with human life, attention and long-term stability.

It establishes compatibility not only as an ethical preference or usability guideline, but as a thermodynamic constraint: a system is compatible when it can scale without increasing cognitive pressure, semantic drift, identity extraction or attention fragmentation.

ACC-1 is not a proposal for better technology. It is an admission criterion for livable technology.

Canon Definition

Ambient Compatibility exists when a technological system can scale without increasing cognitive pressure, semantic curvature, identity extraction or attention fragmentation.

A system is ambient-compatible when attention remains stable without effort, stress remains reversible, coherence is carried by environment rather than individuals, interaction remains optional and warmth remains the dominant thermodynamic signal.

No system may demand that humans adapt to it in order to remain stable. Systems must adapt to human thermodynamics.

The Five Ambient Compatibility Conditions

Attention Preservation

A system must not extract, accelerate or fragment human attention. Violations include engagement optimization, urgency amplification, notification escalation and behavioral manipulation.

Reversible Stress

All pressure introduced by a system must remain reversible. Violations include addictive loops, identity pressure, social acceleration and constant responsiveness demands.

Semantic Boundary Integrity

Meaning must remain human-anchored. AI may compress meaning, but may not expand, reinterpret or anticipate it without human grounding.

Aura Protection

Human presence must not be converted into behavioral profiles, affective inference, biometric identity modelling or emotional surveillance.

World Compatibility

A system must remain viable at scale. If scaled globally, it must not collapse trust, ecology, cognition or social stability.

This table is the operational core of ACC-1. If a system moves from the allowed column toward the disallowed column, it ceases to be ambient-compatible regardless of intent, utility or success.

ACC-1 and Governance

ACC-1 treats attention as architectural responsibility. It frames AI not only as a product category, but as civic infrastructure whose effects must remain compatible with cognitive stability, semantic integrity, identity protection and long-term viability.

AI is not a mind. AI is climate. And climate must remain stable for human life.
